Counselling for Young People

Looking after the parts we do not see...

Understanding that adolescence can be complex, Kate provides tailored support for young people aged 11 years and over who may be struggling with anxiety, stress, friendship difficulities, school overwhelm and identity challenges, using creative methods and a judgement-free approach to ensure comfort and trust.

Being a teenager isn’t always easy. There can be pressure from school, friendships, family, social media and expectations about who you’re supposed to be. Sometimes it can be difficult to explain what’s going on, especially when you don’t really know yourself.

Counselling gives you somewhere to talk without worrying about being judged or told what you should think or feel, a confidential space where you are able to speak freely.

You don’t have to sit in a chair and talk about serious things for a whole session if that doesn’t feel right for you and I know that this first step may feel scary. We can find ways of working that feel comfortable and natural, and we can use creativity, activities or other ways of expressing yourself when talking isn’t easy.

Most importantly, you can be yourself.

Whether you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, angry, sad, stuck, under pressure or simply not quite yourself, you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

A Flexible Approach

Recognising that traditional talking therapy isn't always suitable, particulary for young people, sessions can include art, games, activities, or other expressive tools to support young people who may find it difficult to verbalise feelings, ensuring a comfortable and meaningful experience. Some of our most imporant conversations happen when our hands are busy and eye contact is not required - this is your space, your time and we will do this your way.

With this in mind, I prefer if at all possible, to work in person with young people, at least until we have esablished a relationship. Talking to a stranger about what's troubling us is hard at any age but for young people, face to face on a screen can feel quite intimidating. If we are in the same room, the relationship can be built gently and in a non-threatening way, with games and creative activities to reduce the pressure and fear of exploring and facing what's going on for them.
